Zamac

Zamac or ZA-12 (zinc) material is required by law in several countries where underground coal mining operations are being carried out.

The atmospheric conditions found in underground mining can cause a white powder to form on aluminum material (aluminum is typically used for housings on pneumatic tools). When the aluminum has been affected by this housing is struck by a metal object. Given the environment, this sparking gives way to potential explosions.

The Zamac material used in the castings is spark proof and is unaffected by the atmospheric conditions found in underground mining. The ATP Zamac housing power tools are approved by the mining underwriters in the UK, Germany, Poland and Australia where aluminum power tools are not allowed.
